Your ears will be fully examined at the start of your appointment to ensure that earwax removal is necessary and the right treatment for you.

When earwax occludes the ear canal and blocks the eardrum, sound cannot reach the inner ear as efficiently.

Earwax, or Cerumen, is a sticky substance, made up of oil, skin cells, dust and debris. It is produced by glands in our outer ear canal. When earwax builds up and gets stuck in the ear, it is called an impaction or blockage. It can effect any age, but some people are more prone than others. It can lead to unpleasant symptoms, such as-

·       earache

·       hearing problems

·       dizziness

·       tinnitus

·       itchiness

·       odour from the ear

·       wax may be visible

Microsuction is a safe, gentle and precise method of removing troublesome earwax. Using a binocular microscope to gain a clear view of the ear, a tiny, low pressure vacuum probe is inserted into the ear canal to dislodge and remove the earwax. The procedure usually takes around 30 minutes.

We would advise using olive oil based ear drops or spray (such as Earol) for 3 days before your appointment. This softens the earwax and eases removal.
